Instructors

ALAS instructors are working professionals with 5 to 45 years of experience in their field who volunteer their time to share their knowledge. They are invited to join ALAS based on their expertise, quality of character and ability to inspire enthusiasm. All instructors are vaccinated for Covid-19 and must pass a federal background check.

  • Bob Niemack

    Money Management

    Bob is a filmmaker and storyteller. For 45 years he has worked producing, directing, writing and editing stories about real people who are struggling, fighting, dreaming, mentoring, serving and achieving. His social issue documentaries have appeared on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, PBS, HBO, Discovery Channel, Spike, Lifetime and TLC. He edited the Oscar winning “Scared Straight!” His awards include 7 Emmys and a George Foster Peabody Award. When he was 6 his dad began teaching him how to make a yearly budget and how to account for his 25 cent-a-week allowance. He has never gone over budget since.

  • Ivonne Carvajal

    Storytelling Through Photography

    Ivonne is a professional documentary photographer and teacher. She holds degrees in marketing and advertising. Originally from Costa Rica, Ivonne infuses her work with the vibrant colors and rhythms of her native land. She is a proud mom, happy to be raising her bi-cultural daughter in L.A.

  • Paige Murtaugh

    Farm-to-Table Cooking

    Chef Paige’s vibrant, nourishing cuisine is inspired by the seasons, ancestral exploration, and a love for the land. She specializes in Farm-to-Table culinary experiences as the kitchen coordinator for The Birdhouse, a community garden, arts, and ecology center in Hollywood. Paige trained at Michelin starred restaurants with some of the best Chefs in Los Angeles including Chef Minh Phan and Chef Brendan Collins. Additionally, Paige’s training at The Groundling’s School of Improv, and years of live stand-up sets at some of LA’s top comedy clubs bring a signature fun and playfulness to each of her cooking classes.

  • Keith Kohn

    Music Production

    Keith is the Founder of Feed Your Soul Music, and has worked in TV, Film & Advertising for over 20 years. He has taught music production to both children and adults and loves to share his passion for Music and Technology. Keith is also currently an advisory board member for Give A Beat, a non-profit organization whose mission is to use the power of music as a pathway to healing and opportunity for those impacted by the criminal justice system. Previously, he has taught Music Production for 7 years for an LA-based substance abuse program, where he had used tricks of the trade to fast-track students to find creativity and expression. Currently, he teaches one on one sessions remotely and at his Los Angeles studio. Keith has devoted himself to being a life long learner of the power of Music!

 

ALAS Council

A ten-member body consisting of the five-member Council of Elders and the five-member Council of Youth. The Council is responsible for listening to the suggestions of the students and teachers, evaluating the success of existing workshops, guiding program improvements, and evaluating the benefits of potential workshops.

 

ALAS Advisory Panel

Trusted advisors, from a variety of fields and disciplines, advising the executive director and instructors on best practices, new technologies, novel approaches, legal, business, government guidelines, and health and safety protocols.

  • Angelika Frias

    Angelica is an Urban Strategist. She partners with clients on community initiatives addressing access and equity in health, technology, and climate sustainability. She holds a Master of Urban Planning and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

  • Bart Blackburn

    Bart is a data scientist with a deep appreciation for the arts. He completed his PhD in Statistics from UCLA in 2021. His work in data science includes co-founding a start-up company that was successfully sold in 2019, as well as developing a tool to assess COVID mortality for the World Health Organization. Bart is currently the Chief Data Scientist for a start-up that aims to mitigate the problem of healthcare provider burnout and continues to be interested in finding ways to use his skills for the betterment of society.

  • Diana Sonis

    Diana is a Founding Partner at CX by Design, and the Corporate Relations Director for ALAS. Diana started her career in the financial industry where she managed over $100mm+ in alternative assets for a private Swiss bank, earning her Chartered Financial Analyst designation (CFA) in 2008. Outside of work, Diana has served on the Board of Directors of SVN for over five years. As a first-generation immigrant, Diana understands first-hand the need to strengthen the fabric of local communities to better serve the needs of the next generation.

  • Eve Muller

    Eve graduated from Cal State L.A. with a degree in Spanish. Her love of the language led to many collaborations with Liane Schirmer on translations and writing projects. She has performed with Grupo de Teatro Sinergia, Bilingual Foundation of the Arts, as well as in educational tours for youth with Enrichment Works and The Imagination Company. She works with USC Keck School of Medicine’s Standardized Patient Program, and consults with other universities in many health care settings,

  • Fred Valdes

    Fred is a corporate lawyer and an enthusiastic supporter of the arts. He has lived and worked in San Francisco and New York but is a proud Angeleno. He is a member of LACMA and a season ticket holder of the LA Opera. Freddie hopes to help ALAS increase the availability of arts programs for kids throughout the city of L.A.

  • Marina Garcia

    Marina is a School Psychologist, working in Los Angeles County for over a decade. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Theater Arts and Communication, and a master’s degree in Education from U.C. Davis. After several years working for major Hollywood movie studios, Marina chose to dedicate her time and energy to advocating for children and supporting families within lower socio-economic environments. Marina believes in trusting the power that lies within to nurture the basic needs of children: To be heard, to be seen, and to be loved. Her mantra in working with kids of all ages from TK to High School is- Always put yourself in the shoes of the child.

  • Natalie Flores

    Natalie is an urban farmer and food advocate. She is the founder and director of NOURISH.LA which provides food to thousands of families in need every weekend. Natalie has built various community gardens around the city. Her goal in life is to bring people together around food. Food is sacred and food is a bridge for uniting communities. For Natalie, working directly with community members to help them overcome food insecurity is the most magical work in the world.

  • Tara Enrico

    Tara is Head Counselor at San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, CA. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Women, Culture and Development, and a Master’s degree in Education with an emphasis on counseling. She earned her PPS credential from Cal Lutheran University. Tara believes that creativity feeds the soul and is honored to be serving on an advisory panel that provides kids with opportunities to explore actual life skills and the arts. As a single mom of two boys, she knows well the challenges facing working moms, and is happy to be advising ALAS on how best to address those challenges.

 

ALAS Executive Director

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall guidance, trajectory, and growth of the program including community engagement, fund-raising, and instructor development and retention.

Every child needs focused, positive challenges during adolescence. If those challenges are not provided for them, they will create their own.

Armando Valdes-Kennedy

As a teenager, Armando’s love of the outdoors and fondness for teaching led him to volunteer as a camp counselor at Camp Fox on Catalina Island and then Camp Arbolado in the San Bernardino Mountains. From there he was hired as the Athletics and Academics tutor for YAPS- Youngsters At the Park after School. Soon after, he was hired by the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA to oversee and develop their Youth Sports Program. Next, he went to work for Tarzana Treatment Center working with youth in crisis and recovery.

After a year-long backpacking adventure around the world, he returned to LA and was hired as an academic tutor for the LA County Department of Children and Family Services working with youth in foster care. In 2004 he was recruited by Ribét Preparatory Academy to develop a Theater Arts Program and create its curriculum which was accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. While at Ribét, he also created the Visual Storytellers Program which enlisted entertainment industry professionals to teach classes in every aspect of digital filmmaking from scriptwriting, set-design, and directing to producing, special effects, and editing.
